A Group of Teens Set Out To Catch a Serial Killer in New Trailer For SUMMER OF '84
A serial killer is on the loose in this new trailer for Summer of '84, and a group of teens in the 80s take it upon themselves to catch the killer, who they believe is their next door neighbor. Here's the full synopsis:
Every serial killer is somebody’s neighbor. For 15-year-old Davey, the thought of having a serial killer in his suburban town is a scary yet exciting prospect at the start of a lazy summer. In hormonal overdrive, Davey and his friends dream of sexual conquests until the news reports of the Cape May killer. Davey convinces his friends that they must investigate, and they uncover that his next-door neighbor, an unassuming, single police officer, could be the prime suspect. Could Davey possibly be right, or is it his overactive imagination?
This seems like it has all the right ingredients for a film that a lot of geeks who are obsessed with the 80s might enjoy. It' tapping into that radcore nostalgia that we've all enjoyed since the popularity of Stranger Things.
The only thing is... the movie isn't that good. I had a chance to see it at Sundance. It was at the top of my list of films to see and it just ended up being a complete disappointment. This is what I said in my review:
I loved the initial concept of this movie! Unfortunately, that concept was poorly executed. This could have been a seriously great movie, but due to a poor script, poor character development, and lots of unnecessary plot holes, the movie didn't work for me.
The movie was packed full of 80s references, but nostalgia doesn't make a great story! They can talk about stuff from the 80s all they want, but it's meaningless without a good script or story. Most of the 80s references made throughout the course of the film felt very unnatural and forced.
The movie comes from RKSS, which is the same directing team that brought us Turbo Kid, which I loved! Just because I didn't like it, though, doesn't mean that won't. You might actually enjoy it and I suggest giving it a shot just so you can form your own opinion.
Summer of ’84 stars Graham Verchere (Fargo, The Good Doctor), Judah Lewis (Demolition, The Babysitter), Cory Gruter-Andrew (The 100), Caleb Emery (Goosebumps, American Vandal), and Rich Sommer (Mad Men).
The film was written by Matt Leslie and Stephen J. Smith, and it will hit theaters on August 10th, 2018, and will arrive On Demand and on Digital HD on August 24th, 2018.
