The First Film in Lucasfilm's New STAR WARS Trilogy From Rian Johnson Could Come in 2020

Regardless of what some fans thought of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Lucasfilm obviously had a good experience working with Rian Johnson on the film because they gave him a blank canvas to create his own original Star Wars trilogy. He didn't even have to pitch them an idea.

We have no idea what to expect from it other than the fact it will be completely different from anything in the saga and that it will take place in another corner of the Star Wars universe and feature all new characters. The director has also said that his vision of the movie will "capture the spirit" of George Lucas' original films.

Some new information has come to light from Johnson's producing partner Ram Bergman. In an interview with the Israeli website From The Grapevine, Bergman reiterated:

"It’s a completely new trilogy that writer-director Rian Johnson, my partner, is going to create. It’s all new characters. Everything is new."

He then went on to say that we could expect to see the first film released in two years, which would put the date in the year 2020:

“I can’t tell you because we don’t know yet. Maybe in two years; it’s just in the early stages.”

I didn't think that it would happen that soon, but even though things are still in the early stages, it seems like the development of the film is moving along quickly if that is the target date for the first film. This means that not long after Episode IX brings the current trilogy to a close, this new story will begin. I'm looking forward to seeing what Johnson brings to this new trilogy.

Star Wars: Episode IX will be released on December 20, 2019.
