X-FORCE Director Drew Goddard On How He Will Handle The Film's Characters and Humor

Director Drew Goddard (Cabin in the Woods) is hard at work on developing his X-Force film that will bring together Deadpool, Cable, Domino, and a few other heroes to save the world from some kind of evil villain.

We thought that team would consist of Bedlam, Shatterstar, The Vanisher, and  Zeitgeist but they were all hilariously killed off in Deadpool 2. I have no idea who the new team will entail, but I imagine Firefist, Colossus, and Negasonic Teenage Warhead might be a part of it. When previously talking about what happened in Deadpool 2, Goddard said he was completely on board with it:

"One thing I said to Ryan was, ‘Don’t worry about it, we’ll come up with new ideas; you guys go make your movie, and do your thing. We’ll figure it out.' That tends to be the way I like to work. It’s much more important to focus on making the movie that you’re making than focusing on the next thing. It’s much more important to just make one good movie and take your time, then let that dictate what the movies are after."

Regardless of who ends up being on the X-Force team in the upcoming film, Goddard knows how he wants to approach them and the humor that will be brought to the movie. The one thing he wants to focus on first is to get the audience emotionally invested with the characters. He wants to make sure you care about them. While talking to /Film, the filmmaker was asked "how he was planning to reconcile the joke-a-minute tone established in these films with a story that truly makes us care about characters like Deadpool, Domino, and Cable. Without missing a beat." Goddard said:

"The answer is, I don’t worry about the jokes. I just don’t. I worry about the characters, the story, and trust that we’ll make it funny. I did this show The Good Place, and I’ve been very lucky because I work with [creator] Mike Schur and I know, ‘Oh, these are the funniest people on the planet.’ So when I do anything like that, I just worry about the character, the emotion, and the story, and then I go call them and go, ‘Make it funny now!’ With Ryan, the same thing. Ryan Reynolds is so funny. You don’t stress out about it. It’s always easier to add jokes. It’s impossible to add emotion."

That's pretty great to learn that the team behind The Good Place will be punching up the humor in the film. The Good Place is a great and funny series. More importantly, it sounds like Goddard is going to deliver some strong character development.
